If we are to consider the previous writings in this series1, what are we able to allude to in regards the contemporary art institution? If we are to review the current context we are situated in, a globalized, neo-liberalist, free market capitalist system, where corporate sponsorship and involvement with art institutions is not a rarity but a necessity for the survival of an institution due to decrease in state funding. How then is there the possibility for artistic autonomy and critical artistic discourse within such a system? Is it possible? What are the alternatives for how we should approach the institution today? There is of course a history of struggle and the institution in art, the avant-gardes, the situationists, the fluxus movement and conceptual art, all made breaks from the institution in one form or another, but all eventually ended up back in the institution.
