Leadership literature in the past decade has drawn a sharp distinction between three types of leadership: transactional, charismatic and transformational. Offers a more comprehensive view and examines the probability of the various leadership patterns emerging in organizations from the point of view of the conditions prevailing in the organization and their psychological implications. Indicates the need to expand the paradigms developed concerning leadership in organizations.
What Is Charismatic Leadership?
Transformational leadership is a theory of leadership where a leader works with teams to identify needed change, creating a vision to guide the change through inspiration, and executing the change in tandem with committed members of a group;   it is an integral part of the Full Range Leadership Model. Transformational leadership is when leader behaviors influence followers and inspire them to perform beyond their perceived capabilities. Transformational leadership inspires people to achieve unexpected or remarkable results. It gives workers autonomy over specific jobs, as well as the authority to make decisions once they have been trained. This induces a positive change in the followers attitudes and the organization as a whole. Transformational leaders typically perform four distinct behaviors, also known as the four I's.
These charismatic leaders have a quality which is hard to pin down, but which attracts followers and inspires people to action. Transformational leaders are often highly charismatic because they are capable of initiating and maintaining a significant level of change in the organization. Charismatic leaders have extraordinary skills in communication. This helps to motivate employees through tough times and also help them stay grounded when things are good. The leaders are equally comfortable communicating one-to-one or in a group setting. Though they have a very powerful personality, a charismatic leader also has maturity and character. They behave in a mature and responsible manner on all occasions.
Transformational and Charismatic Leadership
Charismatic leaders are individuals who use their personality and communication style to gain the admiration of followers. Typically, they can communicate effectively, possess emotional sensitivity, put a considerable emphasis on social ties, and can maintain emotional control in numerous situations that may cause stress or troubling emotions. It is not surprising that many political leaders and activist have been characterized as charismatic. More so than any other leadership style, charismatic leadership depends on the personality of the person who is fulfilling the leadership role. Charismatic leadership theory is similar to transformational leadership in that it addresses the qualities of inspiring followers to take action and an enjoyment in shaking up the status quo.
Every leadership style has a different area of focus. For instance, some types of leadership — such as democratic leadership — focus on the development of people. Others, such as bureaucratic leadership, focus on existing processes and hierarchies. Charismatic leadership is defined by a leader who uses his or her communication skills, persuasiveness, and charm to influence others. Charismatic leaders, given their ability to connect with people on a deep level, are especially valuable within organizations that are facing a crisis or are struggling to move forward. Every charismatic leader looks a little bit different.

The qualities of transformational leaders and what distinguishes them from transactional leaders
The theoretical frameworks of charismatic and transformational leadership have been at the forefront of leadership research and practice for the last several decades. This review highlights the developments that have characterized the two areas of study since their conception and attempts to create a solid foundation for leadership research to progress in the future. This review opens with an examination of charismatic leadership and provides an overview of the different viewpoints that have driven its theoretical development. Next the chapter reviews existing literature on charismatic leadership by offering a brief summary of empirical research that has been done to date and follows that with a discussion of some criticisms and limitations of charismatic leadership.
