A dolescence has long been recognized as a period of heightened risk-taking and, accordingly, a stage that requires special oversight from adults. A common subject of social commentary in the United States is that young people today begin adolescence too early and leave it too late. This idea that adolescents undergo a protracted period of development is not unique to modern times, however. Stanley Hall was a pioneer in the scientific study of adolescence, defining it in as a time of storm and stress, although it was identified as a distinct phase of life as early as the fourth century BC. Adolescents continue to refine their sense of self as they relate to others. Erikson referred to the task of the adolescent as one of identity versus role confusion. Adolescent storm and stress, reconsidered
For much of human history, the idea of adolescence being a distinct life stage was nonexistent. However, the years from ages 13 to 19 were not considered part of childhood until the turn of the 19th century. An abundance of research indicates that teens and young adults are experiencing increased levels of stress and depression. Survey respondents reported that during the school year, they had a stress level of 5. During the summer break, teens reported a slight decrease in stress levels — 4. Furthermore, 31 percent of survey respondents said that their stress levels had increased over the past year. In response to their high levels of stress, 40 percent of respondents reported feeling irritable or angry, 36 percent reported feeling nervous or anxious, 36 percent reported feeling fatigued or tired, and 31 percent reported feeling overwhelmed.
Storm and Stress was a phrase coined by psychologist G. Stanley Hall, to refer to the period of adolescence as a time of turmoil and difficulty. The concept of Storm and Stress is comprised of three key elements: conflict with parents and authority figures, mood disruptions, and risky behavior.
