The behavior, in particular, of individual organisms. Not of social groups. Not of cultures. But of persons and animals. In this entry I consider different types of behaviorism. I outline reasons for and against being a behaviorist.

While prediction is a necesary requirement for the acceptance of a scientific theory, the prediction and control of behavior is not a neutral criterion for evaluating psychological theories. Appeal to prediction and control of behavior as a criterion, or objective of psychological theory is intelligible only if Skinner's conception of man is accepted. Emphasis upon control as criterion, as elaborated by Skinner, is not only inadequate but also dangerous. Finally some questions are raised about the relationship between psychological theories and methodology, and background conceptions of man. Skinner, an American behavioral psychologist, is known for his many contributions to learning theory. His Behavior of Organisms reports his experiments with the study of reflexes. Walden Two , a utopian novel, describes a planned community in which positive rather than negative reinforcers serve to maintain appropriate behavior; the novel stimulated the founding of some experimental communities. In Beyond Freedom and Dignity , Skinner attempted to show that only what he called a technology of behavior could save democracy from the many individual and social problems that plague it. An early example of this technology is the so-called Skinner box for conditioning a human child.

Burrhus Frederic Skinner March 20, — August 18, was an American psychologist , behaviorist , author, inventor, and social philosopher. Considering free will to be an illusion, Skinner saw human action as dependent on consequences of previous actions, a theory he would articulate as the principle of reinforcement : If the consequences to an action are bad, there is a high chance the action will not be repeated; if the consequences are good, the probability of the action being repeated becomes stronger. Skinner developed behavior analysis , especially the philosophy of radical behaviorism , [8] and founded the experimental analysis of behavior , a school of experimental research psychology. He also used operant conditioning to strengthen behavior, considering the rate of response to be the most effective measure of response strength. To study operant conditioning, he invented the operant conditioning chamber aka the Skinner Box , [7] and to measure rate he invented the cumulative recorder. Using these tools, he and Charles Ferster produced Skinner's most influential experimental work, outlined in their book Schedules of Reinforcement Contemporary academia considers Skinner, along with John B.

Human behavior is learned, thus all behavior can be unlearned and newbehaviors learned in its place. Behaviorism is concerned primarily with theobservable and measurable aspects of human behavior. Therefore when behaviorsbecome unacceptable, they can be unlearned. Behaviorism views development as acontinuous process in which children play a relatively passive role. It is alsoa general approach that is used in a variety of settings including both clinicaland educational.

Skinner on the prediction and control of behavior

The theory of B. Skinner is based upon the idea that learning is a function of change in overt behavior. A response produces a consequence such as defining a word, hitting a ball, or solving a math problem. When a particular Stimulus-Response S-R pattern is reinforced rewarded , the individual is conditioned to respond. The distinctive characteristic of operant conditioning relative to previous forms of behaviorism e.

By the middle of the seventeenth century it had come to be understood that the world was enclosed in a sea of air, much as the greater part of it was covered by water.
