What is biology? Simply put, it is the study of life, in all of its grandeur. Biology concerns all life forms, from the very small algae to the very large elephant. But how do we know if something is living? To answer these questions, biologists have created a set of criteria called the "characteristics of life. Living things include both the visible world of animals, plants, and fungi as well as the invisible world of bacteria and viruses.
Basic Science Definitions
Biology is the study of life. As humans are living things, we have a natural sense of curiosity and affection towards life and how has come to be. The study of biology incorporates everything imaginable related to the life on Earth. It can be very broad and focus on details regarding the entire planet or it may be very specific and study microscopic structures such as bacteria or DNA. Studying living things, called organisms, takes us all around the world, from the most productive tropical rain forests to the hostile lands of Antarctica or the deepest oceanic basins.
Attribution CC BY. This book is a good survey of important biological concepts that are appropriate for non-major undergraduates. Comprehensiveness rating: 5 see less. The content is accurate, error-free and unbiased. The content is in a simplified form, but that allows instructors to add detail where they see fit for their course customization. Most of the information covered is well established biological concepts and will not change. The biotechnology chapter should be updated to include CRISPR as well as some of the new forms of vaccines that we are seeing emerge.
This glossary is designed to help the reader with the terminology of molecular biology. Each year, the glossary will be expanded to include new terms introduced in the Education Program. The basic terminology of molecular biology is also included. The glossary is divided into several general sections. A cross-reference guide is included to direct readers to the terms they are interested in. The hope is that this addition to the Education Program will further the understanding of those who are less familiar with the discipline of molecular biology. Biology: The Study of Life
Biology , study of living things and their vital processes. The field deals with all the physicochemical aspects of life. The modern tendency toward cross-disciplinary research and the unification of scientific knowledge and investigation from different fields has resulted in significant overlap of the field of biology with other scientific disciplines. Modern principles of other fields— chemistry , medicine , and physics , for example—are integrated with those of biology in areas such as biochemistry , biomedicine, and biophysics.

This glossary of biology terms is a list of definitions of fundamental terms and concepts used in biology , the study of life and of living organisms. It is intended as introductory material for novices; for more specific and technical definitions from sub-disciplines and related fields, see Glossary of genetics , Glossary of evolutionary biology , Glossary of ecology , and Glossary of scientific naming , or any of the organism-specific glossaries in Category:Glossaries of biology. Also called an antibacterial. Also called selective breeding. Sometimes used interchangeably with primary producer. Also called the biosynthetic phase , light-independent reactions , dark reactions , or photosynthetic carbon reduction PCR cycle.
