He became professor emeritus of structural engineering at UCSD in Priestley died in Christchurch of cancer on 23 December Priestley was author or co-author of over scientific papers and research reports, and was the primary advisor for more than 25 doctoral students. Inadequate flexural strength and ductility of shear strength of concrete bridge columns has resulted in collapse or severe damage of a number of California bridges in recent moderate earthquakes.
