My life and loves (Volume 1)
The notorious first volume of Harris' autobiography was published in a private edition in Paris, in In keeping with Harris' oft-stated intention to be candid about sexual matters, this edition came complete with a number of photographs of naked women. Perhaps by this device Harris hoped to attract more of the one-handed type of reader than he might otherwise, but it only served to bring the book to the attention of the French and German Customs, who might otherwise have failed to notice its lubricious content. Given the mores of the time it was surely inevitable that 'My Life and Loves' would become a byword for the graphical description of sexual encounters, even without all the publicity generated by Harris' struggles with the law of several countries. It was too forthright, too unambiguous, not to be noticed. This is not 'the love that dare not speak Re-reading it after a number of years, what comes across more than anything else is a genuine sense of youthful enthusiasm.

His erotic adventures in India, China, Japan, Afric a and Egypt are highly sensuous and his observations of world events and philosophical, politic al and even religious c omments will leave the reader with muc h to c ontemplate. By this time in my life I realized distinc tly that I liked young girls more than I ought to like them. The girlish form before the characteristics of sex bec ome mature attracts me intensely. One evening in London, a friend advised me to visit India, assuring me that my pec uliarity was dominant there. I started for India determined to see all there was to be seen and, if my friend was indeed correc t, to indulge myself whenever the temptation bec ame overpowering.

FOREWORD Give me the man that on Life's rough sea Loves to have his sails filled with a lusty wind, Even till the sail-yards tremble, the masts crack, And the rapt ship runs on her side so low That she drinks water while her keel ploughs air. There is no danger to a man who knows What life and death is; there's not any law Exceeds his knowledge, nor is it lawful That he should stoop to any other law. Justice Levy of the Supreme Court in New York has looked into the second volume of My Life, and "found it necessary to read but a few passages to arrive at the inevitable conclusion that it is neither literature nor art. He may be a judge of what is legal or illegal; but what does he know of literature or art? Levy proceeds to declare that my book "is not only obviously and unquestionably obscene, lewd, lascivious, and indecent, but it is filthy, disgusting and utterly revolting," and he adds, not seeing that he is contradicting himself, "I purposely refrain from naming it, as I am averse to enhancing its sale"; but if it is "disgusting and utterly revolting," then surely no sale need be feared.
