Precious metals and semi-precious metals are used for an increasing number of medical applications due to the properties of these metals and their alloys. Precious Metals for Biomedical Applications reviews the properties of precious metals and their resulting applications in medicine. It discusses the advantages of the structure and properties of precious metals for these applications. Precious Metals for Biomedical Applications is a key reference for material scientists and academics concerned with the properties and uses of these metals. Biomedical engineers, corrosion engineers, materials scientists, dental precious-metal alloys production companies, medical professionals.

Heavy metals are generally defined as metals with relatively high densities , atomic weights , or atomic numbers. The criteria used, and whether metalloids are included, vary depending on the author and context. More specific definitions have been published, but none of these have been widely accepted. The definitions surveyed in this article encompass up to 96 out of the known chemical elements ; only mercury , lead and bismuth meet all of them. Despite this lack of agreement, the term plural or singular is widely used in science.

Precious metal alloys can be supplied in traditional plate form or innovative drop form with high degree of purity. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the influence of precious metal alloy form on metallurgical and mechanical properties of the final dental products with particular reference to metal-ceramic bond strength and casting defects. Specimens were produced starting from the alloy in both plate and drop forms. A specific test method was developed to obtain results that could be representative of the real conditions of use. Moreover, material defects caused by the moulding process were studied. This was attributed to the absence of polluting additives used in the production of drop form alloy. This study shows that the use of precious metal denture alloys supplied in drop form does not affect the metal-ceramic bond strength compared to alloys supplied in the traditional plate form.

For recovering precious metals from waste printed circuit boards PCBs , a novel hybrid technology including physical and biological methods was developed. It consisted of crushing, corona-electrostatic separation and bioleaching. Bioleaching process is the focus of this paper.

Geomicrobiology and Biogeochemistry of Precious Metals

Fraser; Microchemistry of the Precious Metal Elements. American Mineralogist ;; 22 10 : — The precious metal elements to be discussed in this paper are platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, osmium and gold. Considerable attention has been devoted successfully in the past to means of identifying gold and silver in minerals, but the microchemistry of the remaining six elements has been generally neglected. In part, this neglect results from the complex chemical behavior of these elements and, in part, from the assumption that the platinum-palladium group of minerals are rare.

Assembly, Transforming our world, Using biotechnological approaches, precious metals can potentially be recovered from materials that are not economically beneficial by conventional techniques. Conventional processes of precious metal mining and recovery are costly due to the high consumption of energy and use of chemicals for metal mobilization, cementation, etc. Therefore, recycling precious metals from waste streams is a possible solution that can alleviate the disparity between supply and demand.
