Heavy metals are generally defined as metals with relatively high densities , atomic weights , or atomic numbers. The criteria used, and whether metalloids are included, vary depending on the author and context. More specific definitions have been published, but none of these have been widely accepted. The definitions surveyed in this article encompass up to 96 out of the known chemical elements ; only mercury , lead and bismuth meet all of them. Despite this lack of agreement, the term plural or singular is widely used in science.
Precious metal alloys can be supplied in traditional plate form or innovative drop form with high degree of purity. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the influence of precious metal alloy form on metallurgical and mechanical properties of the final dental products with particular reference to metal-ceramic bond strength and casting defects. Specimens were produced starting from the alloy in both plate and drop forms. A specific test method was developed to obtain results that could be representative of the real conditions of use. Moreover, material defects caused by the moulding process were studied. This was attributed to the absence of polluting additives used in the production of drop form alloy. This study shows that the use of precious metal denture alloys supplied in drop form does not affect the metal-ceramic bond strength compared to alloys supplied in the traditional plate form.
