Language and symbolic power

Bourdieu develops a forceful critique of traditional approaches to language, including the linguistic theories of Saussure and Chomsky and the theory of speech-acts elaborated by Austin and others. He argues that language should be viewed not only as a means of communication but also as a medium of power through which individuals pursue their own interests and display their practical competence. Hence every linguistic interaction, however personal or insignificant it may seem, bears the traces of the social structure that it both expresses and helps to reproduce. It also opens up a new approach to the ways in which language is used in the domain of politics. For politics is, among other things, the arena in which words are deeds and the symbolic character of power is at stake. This volume, by one of the leading social thinkers in the world today, represents a major contribution to the study of language and power. It will be of interest to students throughout the social sciences and humanities, especially in sociology, politics, anthropology, linguistics, and literature.

Linguistic capital

Bourdieu, Language and the Media pp Cite as. Bourdieu has been criticized from traditions within linguistics, such as structuralism and critical discourse analysis, and from directly competing sociological approaches to language, such as sociolinguistics and ethnomethodology. We will look, firstly, at critical discourse analysis and postmodernist approaches and then go on to consider, principally, the ethnomethodological challenge to Bourdieu. These debates are very much theoretical ones and abstract, but they nevertheless form the background to the arguments in the chapters which discuss language and the media in case study form. This essay examines key features of Pierre Bourdieu's sociology of culture in light of their potential contribution to the sociology of religion. For Bourdieu, religion can be analyzed as a system of symbolic power with properties analogous to other cultural domains, such as art, philosophy, science, or consumer fashion. Bourdieu's approach to culture develops a political economy of symbolic practices that includes a theory of symbolic interests, a theory of cultural capital, and a theory of symbolic power. While Bourdieu draws upon a variety of intellectual influences, the materialism of Karl Marx and Max Weber's sociology of religion have been particularly influential. This essay will focus on how Bourdieu elaborates from Marx and Weber to develop an original analytical grid for the study of culture and religion as well. In conscious opposition to the idealist tradition of much of Western philosophy, his work often emphasized the corporeal nature of social life and stressed the role of practice and embodiment in social dynamics. Hence every linguistic interaction, however personal or insignificant it may seem, bears the traces of the social structure that it both expresses and helps to reproduce. The internal structures become embodied and work in a deeper, practical and often pre-reflexive way. Doxa tends to favor the particular social arrangement of the field, thus privileging the dominant and taking their position of dominance as self-evident and universally favorable. Language — Bourdieu takes language to be not merely a method of communication, but also a mechanism of power. Different uses of language tend to reiterate the respective positions of each participant. Contents General Introduction Part I.
