A keystone species is a species which has a disproportionately large effect on its natural environment relative to its abundance, a concept introduced in by the zoologist Robert T. Keystone species play a critical role in maintaining the structure of an ecological community , affecting many other organisms in an ecosystem and helping to determine the types and numbers of various other species in the community. Without keystone species, the ecosystem would be dramatically different or cease to exist altogether.

These previous years general awareness quiz objective questions answers for competitive exam are very important for prelims and mains exams. For example in intertidal regions starfish feeds on mussels.

This handout accompanies an engaging and dynamic documentary about the interconnection between keystone species, trophic levels, and ecosystems. This handout is perfect for an introduction or enrichment to the keystone species and ecosystems, a great sub-plan, enrichment, or lesson all in its own right. The question EDITABLE handout available in word document and pdf include 15 short answer questions that are timed in sequence to the video, and 5 summarizing analysis questions.

The questions are formatted short-answer style, however no answer is much longer than words. The questions are spaced out so that they do not go too fast or too slow and encompass the entire film from start to finish.

This short film tells the story of how these concepts were first established through the pioneering experiments of two young researches: Robert Paine and James Estes. Or how many individuals of the species can live somewhere? James Estes and colleague John Palmisano discovered that the kelp forest ecosystems of the North Pacific are regulated by the presence or absence of sea otters, which feed on sea urchins that consume kelp.

These direct and indirect effects of sea otters on other species describe a trophic cascade. These early studies were the inspiration for hundreds of investigations on other keystone species and trophic cascades, as well as ongoing studies into the regulation of population sizes and species numbers.

This year I decided to change the way I teach the last unit of the year, which is ecology. Our textbook is really old, and not aligned to NGSS. This year, I wanted to start developing some phenomenon based lessons that start with interesting observations and build student understanding from those real-world observations. HHMI has some amazing ecology lessons, including lessons based on trophic cascades. Since students love otters, I started out with a question and an image of sea otters. And, what determines how large each population can grow?

This course is an introduction to ecology and ecosystem dynamics using a systems thinking lens. Through a case study on Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, learners will explore how scientists study ecosystems, and investigate the complex array of factors that inform management efforts. At the end of the course, learners will be able to grapple with real-world conservation questions, such as whether an ecosystem can recover from anthropogenic disruption and what role humans can, and should, play in that recovery. I really enjoyed taking this course. It gave me good knowledge base in ecology and conservation. The course is very well structured and is suitable for people with no prior knowledge in the topic.
