In fact, every research methodology is based on a set of epistemological principles that validate produced knowledge. Qualitative research methodology has been often explained by phenomenological epistemology in Persian texts. Although it can be true, grounded theory is explained in terms of pragmatism and symbolic interactionism lessons of its inventors. Here we present a philosophical guide for scientists to assist in the production of effective social science adapted from Moon and Blackman, Understanding philosophy is important because social science research can only be meaningfully interpreted when there is clarity about the decisions that were taken that affect the research outcomes. Some of these decisions are based, not always knowingly, on some key philosophical principles, as outlined in the figure below.


Understanding this will help librarian researchers make appropriate choices regarding methods and methodology for the research ques- tions.

The case study approach has been widely used in management studies and the social sciences more generally. However, there are still doubts about when and how case studies should be used. This paper aims to discuss this approach, its various uses and applications, in light of epistemological principles, as well as the criteria for rigor and validity.
