Nef Committee on Social Thought and the College, is famous in modern philosophical circles for his Thinking and Being: A Two Way Capacity —a book forthcoming from Harvard University Press but long in circulation in the form of drafts and lecture notes passed among colleagues and former students. Could there be a logical alien—a being whose ways of talking, inferring, and contradicting exhibit an entirely different logical shape than ours, yet who nonetheless is thinking? Could someone, contrary to the most basic rules of logic, think that two contradictory statements are both true at the same time?

Ever since completing his Ph. As of June, his curriculum vitae listed no publications to date — not even a journal article. At 60, he remains unknown to most scholars in his field. Among a circle of philosophers who have worked or interacted with Kimhi, however, he has a towering reputation. To his admirers, Kimhi is a hidden giant, a profound thinker who, because of a personality at once madly undisciplined and obsessively perfectionistic, has been unable to commit his ideas to paper. As a result, he has not been able to share his insights — about logic, language, metaphysics, theology, psychoanalysis, aesthetics and literature — with the wider academic world. This type of character, though unusual, is not unheard-of in philosophy.

This is a very important book. It discusses some of the most fundamental issues in philosophy. And in its course, it challenges assumptions that have dominated and defined analytic philosophy since its inception. Every serious philosopher should read it, and it is hard to believe that those who do will not be changed by it in some way. The book comprises three essays and an introduction.

Opposing a long-standing orthodoxy of the Western philosophical tradition running from ancient Greek thought until the late nineteenth century, Frege argued that psychological laws of thought—those that explicate how we in fact think—must be distinguished from logical laws of thought—those that formulate and impose rational requirements on thinking. Logic does not describe how we actually think, but only how we should. Yet by thus sundering the logical from the psychological, Frege was unable to explain certain fundamental logical truths, most notably the psychological version of the law of non-contradiction—that one cannot think a thought and its negation simultaneously. In closing the gap that Frege opened, Kimhi shows that the two principles of non-contradiction—the ontological principle and the psychological principle—are in fact aspects of the very same capacity, differently manifested in thinking and being. As his argument progresses, Kimhi draws on the insights of historical figures such as Aristotle, Kant, and Wittgenstein to develop highly original accounts of topics that are of central importance to logic and philosophy more generally. Self-consciousness, language, and logic are revealed to be but different sides of the same reality.

This particular formulation of the law of non-contradiction appears to specify a limit on what is possible to believe or to think. There are three traditional ways to understand the necessity expressed by this formulation of the law: 1 the law is a law of nature, and thus expresses a natural or empirical necessity, 2 the law is an instance of a logical truth, and thus expresses a logical necessity, 3 the law is a normative law of thoughts-- a demand to which all intellectual activities must conform. I shall discuss the dual concepts of affirmation and denial and some of their history. There is, I shall try show, a different way different from 1 2 and 3 associated with Spinoza to see the law. Spinoza's discussion of affirmation will allow us to see that "this law is not a law but life", and thus "life as it is lived in the village at the foot of the hill on which the Castle is built.
