As a global organisation, we, like many others, recognize the significant threat posed by the coronavirus.

While emotions and feelings are quite different, we all use the words interchangeably to more or less explain the same thing — how something or someone makes us feel. Imagine this: You sprint through the airport, on the run to catch your flight. Before you can say anything, you tear up overwhelmed with excitement and forget about the rush while you give your friend a firm hug.

Music-Evoked Emotions—Current Studies

The 2nd edition was published in Williamson wrote " Music, Thought, and Feeling definitely fills a gap in the current literature. It is an excellent and, I am sure, extremely welcome resource for anyone who is planning a course on music cognition, either at undergraduate or graduate level. This is thanks to the combination of accessible and engaging language, clear structure, and relevant and illustrative resources. The demeanour of the book is one that assumes no specific artistic or scientific background: Just a desire to engage with the modern issues of music cognition. In his review of the book for Musicae Scientiae Volume 13, Number 2 , Tuomas Eerola wrote " Music, Thought, and Feeling is an important pedagogical contribution to the field as it not only manages to pull together the strings of the last thirty years of research from a broad range of topics within music cognition, but it performs this in a highly accessible format, and written in an enthusiastic and analytic style. What it does best is capture the great variety of our field, deftly weaving together theory and empirical results into a compelling narrative that provides a unique snapshot of our discipline and a time of unprecedented expansion.

I explicate the emotion-feeling distinction in modern terms distinguishing mood as well , and urge that the expression of feeling is too central to be waived off as outside the proper philosophical subject of artistic expression. Restricting the discussion to the art of painting and drawing , I sketch a partial psychological model for the exrtistic expression of feelipression of feeling. We must not suppose that we first have a disembodied feeling, and then set out to find an embodiment adequate to it. In a word, imaginative expression creates the feeling in creating its embodiment, and the feeling so created cannot be otherwise expressed, but cannot otherwise exist, that in and through the embodiment which imagination has found for it. Bosanquet p. The problem is not that the thing expressed may be something altogether different from a mental state or process, as when it is said that the famous picture by Delacroix expresses the collective triumph of political liberty.

Music is a ubiquitous phenomenon in human cultures, mostly due to its power to evoke and regulate emotions. However, effects of music evoking different emotional experiences such as sadness and happiness on cognition, and in particular on self-generated thought, are unknown. Here we use probe-caught thought sampling and functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI to investigate the influence of sad and happy music on mind-wandering and its underlying neuronal mechanisms. In three experiments we found that sad music, compared with happy music, is associated with stronger mind-wandering Experiments 1A and 1B and greater centrality of the nodes of the Default Mode Network DMN Experiment 2.

The present study is focused on a review of the current state of investigating music-evoked emotions experimentally, theoretically and with respect to their therapeutic potentials. After a concise historical overview and a schematic of the hearing mechanisms, experimental studies on music listeners and on music performers are discussed, starting with the presentation of characteristic musical stimuli and the basic features of tomographic imaging of emotional activation in the brain, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI and positron emission tomography PET , which offer high spatial resolution in the millimeter range. The progress in correlating activation imaging in the brain to the psychological understanding of music-evoked emotion is demonstrated and some prospects for future research are outlined. Research in psychoneuroendocrinology and molecular markers is reviewed in the context of music-evoked emotions and the results indicate that the research in this area should be intensified. An assessment of studies involving measuring techniques with high temporal resolution down to the 10 ms range, as, e.
