Atoms and bonds in molecules and chemical explanations

Skill 1. Organic chemistry studies the properties and reactions of organic compounds. Protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus of the atom, while electrons are found in the electron cloud around the nucleus. The mass number, A , is the sum of the number of protons and the number of neutrons in a nucleus. The type of element an atom represents is defined by the atomic number, Z in the atom.

Unit 1 : Molecules and their interaction relevant to Biology

Chemical bonding , any of the interactions that account for the association of atoms into molecules , ions , crystals , and other stable species that make up the familiar substances of the everyday world. When atoms approach one another, their nuclei and electrons interact and tend to distribute themselves in space in such a way that the total energy is lower than it would be in any alternative arrangement. If the total energy of a group of atoms is lower than the sum of the energies of the component atoms, they then bond together and the energy lowering is the bonding energy. The ideas that helped to establish the nature of chemical bonding came to fruition during the early 20th century, after the electron had been discovered and quantum mechanics had provided a language for the description of the behaviour of electrons in atoms. However, even though chemists need quantum mechanics to attain a detailed quantitative understanding of bond formation, much of their pragmatic understanding of bonds is expressed in simple intuitive models. These models treat bonds as primarily of two kinds—namely, ionic and covalent.

How elements interact with one another depends on how their electrons are arranged and how many openings for electrons exist at the outermost region where electrons are present in an atom. Electrons exist at energy levels that form shells around the nucleus. The closest shell can hold up to two electrons. The closest shell to the nucleus is always filled first, before any other shell can be filled. Hydrogen has one electron; therefore, it has only one spot occupied within the lowest shell. Helium has two electrons; therefore, it can completely fill the lowest shell with its two electrons.

The probe is designed to find out if students think bonds are physical matter or attractions between electrons. A chemical bond is an attraction between atoms; it is not made up of matter that holds atoms together, and it is not a structural part of an atom. Two or more atoms are linked together by chemical bonds.

Chemical bond

At its most fundamental level, life is made up of matter. Matter is any substance that occupies space and has mass. Elements are unique forms of matter with specific chemical and physical properties that cannot break down into smaller substances by ordinary chemical reactions.

1.S: Structure and Bonding (Summary)

Atoms separated by a great distance cannot link; rather, they must come close enough for the electrons in their valence shells to interact. But do atoms ever actually touch one another? Most physicists would say no, because the negatively charged electrons in their valence shells repel one another.

Chemical bonding describes a variety of interactions that hold atoms together in chemical compounds.

The concepts of atoms and bonds in molecules which appeared in chemistry during the nineteenth century are unavoidable to explain the structure and the reactivity of the matter at a chemical level of understanding.
