A water distribution system is a part of water supply network with components that carry potable water from a centralized treatment plant or wells to water consumers in order to adequately deliver water to satisfy residential, commercial, industrial and fire fighting requirements. A definition uses the term water distribution network for a portion of a water distribution system up to the service points of bulk water consumers or demand nodes that many consumers are lumped up together. A water distribution system consists of pipelines, storage facilities, pumps, and other accessories. Pipelines laid within public right of way called water mains are used to transport water within a distribution system. Large diameter water mains called primary feeders are used to connect between water treatment plants and service areas. Secondary feeders are connected between primary feeders and distributors. Distributors are water mains that are located near the water users, which also supply water to individual fire hydrants.

Water Quality in Pipe Distribution Systems

Buy this book in print. Water Distribution Systems is a comprehensive introduction to the topic, covering fundamental concepts and exploring the latest ideas of good practice. Water industry professionals have to address, not only classic design and management problems but also, increasingly, environmental and sustainability requirements and concerns. Drawing together information that is currently scattered across several sources, this book is a concise update of modern practice and current developments. Each chapter has been written by both academics and practitioners, balancing what's theoretically possible against what's practical in key areas such as modelling, planning, and operational and management issues, as well as more advanced topics such as leakage management, optimal design, asset planning and management. A good starting point for exploration of a complex topic, Water Distribution Systems is a key text for students and early-stage practitioners training to become water industry practitioners, and a useful reference book for practising engineers, particularly to provide up-to-date information on practices in today's increasingly complex water industry. Perspectives are different frameworks from which to explore the knowledge around sustainable sanitation and water management. Perspectives are like filters: they compile and structure the information that relate to a given focus theme, region or context. This allows you to quickly navigate to the content of your particular interest while promoting the holistic understanding of sustainable sanitation and water management.

Author: Vanessa Speight. Water-distribution systems, the last barriers in the water-treatment process, are vital to protecting public health. Technologies for treating drinking water have advanced significantly over the past century. Today the availability of abundant, clean, safe drinking water, on demand at every location, is taken for granted in the developed world. However, even this highly treated water is subject to degradations in quality once it leaves the treatment plant and enters the distribution system.
