Civil rights movements
A major roadblock to gaining voting rights in Mississippi and indeed, across the South, were the state Democratic Parties. A web of law, intimidation, official and unofficial force, and violence terrorizing Blacks seeking voting rights, kept Black people from voting. Much the same was true in other areas of the South where efforts aimed at expanding Black voter registration and political participation were unfolding. This was to prove that Blacks would register and vote if they could do so at unintimidating polling places; that apathy was not the problem, but violence, reprisal, and fear was. With the help of hundreds of young volunteers who came to Mississippi in the Freedom Summer of , the MFDP slowly built up its membership and organized parallel precinct, county, and regional meetings. This culminated in a state convention to select delegates for the Atlantic City convention. The person MFDP delegation included a wide variety of homegrown activists known for their determination and militancy in the face of harsh racial oppression.

I sat with her in the cab of a Chevy Silverado pickup truck, swatting at the squadrons of giant, fluttering mosquitoes that had invaded the interior the last time she opened a window. "The Special Plight and the Role of Black Women," Fannie Lou Hamer. Bom Fannie Lou Townsend (–), Hamer was the youngest of twenty.
Hamer, Fannie Lou 1917–1977
Fannie Lou Hamer spent most of her life in rural southern poverty, entering politics late in life out of anger and a passionate desire to change a racist system. She is probably best known for her work with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee SNCC , the group that was at the forefront of the American voter registration drives of the s. Hamer captured national attention as a spokeswoman for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party MFDP , which eventually succeeded in electing many blacks to national office in Mississippi. She was also deeply committed to grass-roots antipoverty projects in her own community, Ruleville, Mississippi.
Civil rights movements are a worldwide series of political movements for equality before the law , that peaked in the s. In some situations, they have been accompanied, or followed, by civil unrest and armed rebellion. The process has been long and tenuous in many countries, and many of these movements did not, or have yet to, fully achieve their goals, although the efforts of these movements have led to improvements in the legal rights of some previously oppressed groups of people, in some places.
You must seek the Opposite, the Other, Him whose difference from you means power, means mastery. Without Him you are powerless, unfinished. With her you can only be two halves, unbalanced, mutilated, contemptible.
She became involved with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee in , through which she led voting drives and relief efforts. Her parents were sharecroppers in the Mississippi Delta area, and Hamer began working in the fields when she was only 6 years old. Around the age of 12, Hamer dropped out of school in order to work full time and help out her family. She continued to work as a sharecropper after her marriage to Perry "Pap" Hamer. The couple toiled on a cotton plantation near Ruleville, Mississippi, eventually adopting children. Hamer was unable to have children of her own; while undergoing surgery to remove a tumor, she was given a hysterectomy without her consent. On August 31, , she traveled with 17 others to the county courthouse in Indianola to accomplish this goal.
Hamer had risen from a sharecropper to a national figure after running for Congress on the bi-racial MFDP ticket which led to her moving testimony before Congress about the brutality she and other African Americans endured when they tried to vote in Mississippi. Reverend Coles, Mrs. At the time he visited in Atlanta, Georgia, I think he was then the minister of home affairs in Kenya. The fact that you would be singing about him, to me is quite significant. Two or three years ago, most of our people would choose to sing about someone who was, you know, passive and meek and humble and forgiving. Oginga Odinga is not passive. In Mississippi we need a Mau Mau.
