The Bauhaus was arguably the single most influential modernist art school of the 20 th century. Its approach to teaching, and to the relationship between art, society, and technology, had a major impact both in Europe and in the United States long after its closure under Nazi pressure in The Bauhaus was influenced by 19 th and early th -century artistic directions such as the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as Art Nouveau and its many international incarnations, including the Jugendstil and Vienna Secession. All of these movements sought to level the distinction between the fine and applied arts, and to reunite creativity and manufacturing; their legacy was reflected in the romantic medievalism of the Bauhaus ethos during its early years, when it fashioned itself as a kind of craftsmen's guild. But by the mids this vision had given way to a stress on uniting art and industrial design, and it was this which underpinned the Bauhaus's most original and important achievements.

Perhaps the fact that there is a separate book for color made the black-and-whiteness of the work shown seem somewhat repetitive after awhile.
But there is a lot to think about in his approach to art and craft. And the fact that he makes no value judgement about "art" vs "craft" in the act of creation is also a plus. Though I wouldn't try to recreate all of Itten's lessons, the book is worth looking at for anyone interested in the process of design. Nov 30, Layali rated it really liked it. Oh my Itten.
I read this. Book as part of a research study for one of the Bauhaus masters. My pick in for the studio course study fell on Johannes Itten. I cannot put my finger on why have I chosen him in particular but I think his oddities fill in since with mine. He was an odd person but a brilliant one at that. Humane is what I would call out to his work. He got in touch with Mother Nature from all aspects until he became one with it or so I see it. He is one who has the capacity to stir up and spark the well of endless inspiration so as to touch at originality and nature in a way that no other could do.
I can really see him as my teacher. Much respect for him. And the fact that he was affected by japanese ink art I was all the more humbled by him. Jun 09, Akef Rahmati rated it liked it. The Bauhaus thus placed itself in the romantic tradition of the Gesamtkunstidee, which sought to restore the old unity of craft, technical and artistic production lost through industrialisation, which had once been taken for granted in the medieval cathedral and baroque palace architecture. But why were the first Bauhaus teachers not architects and craftsmen, but painters?
