Certain parasites, such as horn flies, Haematobia irritans L. Diptera: Muscidae , and biting midges, Culicoides spp. Diptera: Ceratopogonidae , a vector of bluetongue virus, are restricted to lower elevations. However, some parasites are endemic to high elevations, such as the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles Acari: Ixodidae , a vector of many diseases. Multiple horse fly and mosquito species persist at various elevation gradients, with some having preference for lower or higher elevations. Evidence suggests changing weather patterns, climate variability, and animal movements could shift some parasites and diseases into higher elevations, such as mosquitoes and biting midges. Moving livestock to high-elevation ranges may also increase the opportunity for livestock—wildlife interactions, parasite and disease transmission, and exposure.

Tropical diseases are diseases that are prevalent in or unique to tropical and subtropical regions. However, many were present in northern Europe and northern America in the 17th and 18th centuries before modern understanding of disease causation. The initial impetus for tropical medicine was to protect the health of colonial settlers, notably in India under the British Raj. These insects may carry a parasite, bacterium or virus that is infectious to humans and animals. Most often disease is transmitted by an insect "bite", which causes transmission of the infectious agent through subcutaneous blood exchange. Vaccines are not available for most of the diseases listed here, and many do not have cures.

Anhrax, a highly infectious and fatal disease of cattle, is caused by a relatively large spore-forming rectangular shaped bacterium called Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax causes acute mortality in ruminants. The bacteria produce extremely potent toxins which are responsible for the ill effects, causing a high mortality rate. Signs of the illness usually appear 3 to 7 days after the spores are swallowed or inhaled. Once signs begin in animals, they usually die within two days.

A parasite is an organism that lives in another organism, called the host, and often harms it. It depends on its host for survival. Without a host, a parasite cannot live, grow and multiply. For this reason, it rarely kills the host, but it can spread diseases, and some of these can be fatal. Parasites, unlike predators, are usually much smaller than their host and they reproduce at a faster rate. Parasites vary widely.

Parasites are organisms that live off other organisms, or hosts, to survive. Others grow, reproduce, or invade organ systems that make their hosts sick, resulting in a parasitic infection. Parasitic infections are a big problem in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Malaria is one of the deadliest parasitic diseases. Parasitic infections can also occur in the United States.
