This essay stemmed from the reading I did around the First Crusade when getting ready to teach it at Birkbeck. Presenting to the Birkbeck History Society at their Wye weekend gave me the prompt to actually do that, and thereafter I toyed with the idea of getting it into print somewhere, and asked various people for comments on it, most especially as to whether it was already out there in some form. In particular, the importance I originally felt these concepts had in the classroom leads me to think it might be useful to others teaching the Crusade to have it there to refer to. So it comes here. But it may help, or better still interest you.
