Business Ethics in Theory and Practice pp Cite as. Traditional microeconomic models consider several distinct factors contributing to the production process: land, labor and capital. As technology, corporate ownership and governance, and societal models themselves evolved, however, the differences among these factors have diminished and their importance relative to each other has changed.

In an agricultural society, land was the most important factor; in an industrial society, it became capital goods or machines; in a post-industrial society, it has become labor, albeit labor of a very sophisticated kind. Business and Culture in the Philippines

The culture of the Philippines is a combination of cultures of the East and West. In pre-colonial times, the Philippines was a divided set of nations, islands and tribes being ruled by their own kings, chieftains, lakans , rajahs , datus and sultans. Every nation has its own identity and some are even part of a larger empire outside of what is now the Philippines. Manila , for example, was once part of the Islamic Sultanate of Brunei , and the Sulu Archipelago was also part of the Hindu Majapahit. The advent of colonial rule in the islands marked the beginning of the Philippines as an entity, a collection of Southeast Asian countries united under Spanish Empire. Chinese influence has been felt throughout Southeast Asia through trade, specifically by the Ming dynasty and other earlier dynasties from as early as the 9th century. The blending of indigenous, colonial and external influence is very evident in the historic arts and traditions of the country.

Although the details vary in the retelling, one Philippine creation myth focuses on this core element: a piece of bamboo, emerging from the primordial earth, split apart by the beak of a powerful bird. From the bamboo a woman and man come forth, the progenitors of the Filipino people. The genesis of the Philippine nation, however, is a more complicated historical narrative. During their sixteenth-century expansion into the East, Ferdinand Magellan and other explorers bearing the Spanish flag encountered several uncharted territories. Under royal decree, Spanish colonizers eventually demarcated a broad geographical expanse of hundreds of islands into a single colony, thus coalescing large groups of cultural areas with varying degrees of familiarity with one another as Las Islas Filipinas.

Despite a string of largely unsympathetic rulers, the turbulent history of the Phillipines has nonetheless managed to produce a friendly, resilient, family-oriented, deeply religious and artistic population, most of whom are indigenous, Spanish or of mixed heritage. People have lived in the Philippines since the dawn of human history. Originally, the various islands were populated by competing tribes, each with their own king or queen. In , the explorer Magellan claimed the islands for Spain and colonization began in Manila was established as the capital of what was then known was the Spanish East Indies in Spanish rule brought Catholicism to the area, with missionaries establishing churches, schools, hospitals, universities and largely displacing the previously entrenched Hindu, Islamic and Buddhist faiths.

Philippines — History and Culture

Family is considered to be the foundation of social life for most Filipinos. The nuclear family is the core family unit, however bonds are often tight knit among extended family members. Indeed, people may be encouraged to have a relationship with their aunts and uncles that is just as strong as the relationship with their parents. Filial piety is an important concept in Filipino culture.
