As a fisherman who has caught nothing for the last 84 days, Santiago is a man fighting against defeat. Yet Santiago never gives in to defeat: he sails further into the ocean than he ever has before in hopes of landing a fish, struggles with the marlin for three days and nights despite immense physical pain and exhaustion, and, after catching the marlin, fights off the sharks even when it's clear that the battle against…. Pride is often depicted as negative attribute that causes people to reach for too much and, as a result, suffer a terrible fall.

From the very first paragraph, Santiago is characterized as someone struggling against defeat. He has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish—he will soon pass his own record of eighty-seven days. He lands the marlin, tying his record of eighty-seven days after a brutal three-day fight, and he continues to ward off sharks from stealing his prey, even though he knows the battle is useless. Both Santiago and the marlin display qualities of pride, honor, and bravery, and both are subject to the same eternal law: they must kill or be killed.

The Old Man and the Sea Themes

The Old Man and the Sea continues this autobiographical tradition. Hemingway was one of the most prolific and successful writers of the s and s, but in , after nearly ten years without publishing a novel, Across the River and Into the Trees was published, and it was a disaster. According to award-winning biographer James R. Hemingway writes: "The sail was patched with flour sacks and…it looked like the flag of permanent defeat" 9. Hemingway not writing a successful novel in ten years is similar to Santiago not catching a fish in 84 days. With such a long time between novels and his reputation as a great author on the line, Hemingway had to prove himself again, and Santiago also felt that he had to prove himself again. Now he was proving it again.

The Old Man and the Sea was published after the bleakest ten years in Hemingway's literary career. His last major work, Across the River and into the Trees , was condemned as unintentional self-parody, and people began to think that Hemingway had exhausted his store of ideas. Santiago 's story was originally conceived as part of a larger work, including material that later appeared in Islands in the Stream. This larger work, which Hemingway referred to as " The Sea Book," was proving difficult, and when Hemingway received positive reviews of the Santiago story, known then as "The Sea in Being," he decided to allow it to be published independently. He wrote to publisher Charles Scribner in October , "This is the prose that I have been working for all my life that should read easily and simply and seem short and yet have all the dimensions of the visible world and the world of man's spirit. It is as good prose as I can write as of now. The Old Man and the Sea , published in its entirety in one edition of Life magazine, was an instant success.

According to Burhans, the novel reveals the theme of individualism and interdependence. Santiago has learned the importance of solidarity and interdependence through his individualism. This old man has been unlucky because of his failure to catch a single fish for as many eighty-four days. He has fished alone for forty-four days and with the boy for another forty days. The boy deserts him thinking him to be an unlucky fisherman. He has caught a big marlin which is mauled by the sharks.

Hemingway spends a good deal of time drawing connections between Santiago and his natural environment: the fish, birds, and stars are all his brothers or friends, he has the heart of a turtle, eats turtle eggs for strength, drinks shark liver oil for health, etc.

One of his most famous works, it tells the story of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Cuba.
