Although most people value humor, philosophers have said little about it, and what they have said is largely critical. Three traditional theories of laughter and humor are examined, along with the theory that humor evolved from mock-aggressive play in apes. Understanding humor as play helps counter the traditional objections to it and reveals some of its benefits, including those it shares with philosophy itself. Philosophers are concerned with what is important in life, so two things are surprising about what they have said about humor.

Aristotle on Why We Laugh at Jokes

In it, Mordechai Gordon, an accomplished professor in the School of Education at Quinnipiac University, brings a philosophical exploration of the laughing animal, as the subtitle puts it, to bear on the field of philosophy of education. As he explains it, this brief volume is a compilation of essays resulting from his reflection over four years on the relationship of humor to human flourishing, as well as from his selective engagement with humor scholarship. Gordon lucidly conveys many rich philosophical insights. This is to confuse the reach of a philosophy of humor with the limitations of the competing monocausal theories of humor dynamics, namely, superiority, incongruity, and relief. An eclectic theory might well combine these explanations of humor in context-dependent ways and precisely in so doing achieve a comprehensive applicability. Turning to specific chapters, in the first, following a brief excursus through the history of philosophers on humor, Gordon highlights four symmetries between philosophical cognition and humor appreciation: making sense of human existence, attending to the play of language and meaning, temporarily suspending everyday mechanisms, and enlivening critical thinking.

Don't have an account? Nowadays, almost everyone seems to defend one version or another of the incongruity theory. Indeed, scholars have noticed repeatedly that many jokes can hardly be seen as including any superiority or hostility that might explain why they are funny. This chapter argues that Aristotle clearly saw that both of these two features, incongruity and hostility, were central in jokes. The two main questions addressed here are the following: What sort of hostility does Aristotle think is at stake? How does he think it relates to incongruity?

The Philosophy of Laughter and Humor

There are many theories of humor which attempt to explain what humor is, what social functions it serves, and what would be considered humorous. Among the prevailing types of theories that attempt to account for the existence of humor, there are psychological theories, the vast majority of which consider humor to be very healthy behavior; there are spiritual theories , which consider humor to be an inexplicable mystery, very much like a mystical experience. Relief theory maintains that laughter is a homeostatic mechanism by which psychological tension is reduced. It is believed that this is the reason we laugh whilst being tickled, due to a buildup of tension as the tickler "strikes". The latter point of view was supported also by Sigmund Freud.

John Morreall's contributions to the scholarship on laughter and humor are well known and well respected. His later book Comedy, Tragedy and Religion SUNY, presents an original and creative interpretation of Eastern and Western religions in terms of how they reflect both comic and tragic perspectives. His newest book, Comic Relief: A Comprehensive Philosophy of Humor , synthesizes many of the insights from these previous works, promising to offer a comprehensive theory of humor that bridges academic disciplines by drawing on ideas from fields as diverse as psychology, biology, aesthetics, ethics, and religion. For a book of only pages not counting the notes and bibliography , this is a very ambitious goal, and in aspiring toward this goal, Morreall's latest investigation does indeed accomplish some interesting things. The formulation of a truly comprehensive philosophy of humor is not, however, among these accomplishments.

- Solo.

See a Problem?
