But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

Books about "America's Christian heritage" usually tend to smooth over the difficult bits—Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson are re-cast as committed Christians, the Enlightenment is overlooked as an essential factor in the formation of the United States, and the sins of the people are marginalized in favor of hymns to religious nationalism. Peter Marshall and David Manuel do a good job of avoiding the first two pitfalls, but while they don't ignore national or personal transgression in America's history, they do couch everything in terms of "God's plan for the United States. This isn't a curriculum in any sense. The primary series consists of three books The Light and the Glory , From Sea To Shining Sea , and Sounding Forth the Trumpet for adults and older students; abridged versions of each volume are available for children ages , or thereabouts along with activity books for ages and study guides. Both the adult books and those for kids are written in a narrative format that reads like a novel without dialogue. All the major events from the discoveries of Columbus to the end of the Civil War are included. The adult series is quite in-depth; the children's abridgements are more streamlined, and almost present a kind of bullet-point history lesson, though they're still readable and engaging.

Christ is the Light of nations. Because this is so, this Sacred Synod gathered together in the Holy Spirit eagerly desires, by proclaiming the Gospel to every creature, 1 to bring the light of Christ to all men, a light brightly visible on the countenance of the Church. Since the Church is in Christ like a sacrament or as a sign and instrument both of a very closely knit union with God and of the unity of the whole human race, it desires now to unfold more fully to the faithful of the Church and to the whole world its own inner nature and universal mission. This it intends to do following faithfully the teaching of previous councils. The present-day conditions of the world add greater urgency to this work of the Church so that all men, joined more closely today by various social, technical and cultural ties, might also attain fuller unity in Christ. The eternal Father, by a free and hidden plan of His own wisdom and goodness, created the whole world. His plan was to raise men to a participation of the divine life.

From the very beginning it would seem that God had a plan for America. From its discovery by Europeans to its settlement, from the Revolution to Manifest Destiny, from the stirrings of civil unrest to civil war, America was on a path. In our pluralistic world, when textbooks are being rewritten in ways that obscure the Judeo-Christian beginnings of our country, the books in the Discovering God's Plan for America series help ground young readers in a distinctly evangelical way of understanding early American history. As young readers look at their nation's development from God's point of view, they will begin to have a clearer idea of how much we owe to a very few--and how much is still at stake. These engaging books bring history alive in a way that will inspire young people to do their important part in shaping this nation into the future. Peter Marshall , a graduate of Yale University and Princeton Theological Seminary, was a nationally recognized speaker on Christian growth and maturity and on America's Christian heritage. Anna Wilson Fishel trained in law and was involved in government work.

If you have teens who have already taken secular history courses in school, then The Light and the Glory will introduce them to a different viewpoint for studying early American history. It tells the stories of famous men in our country's early history, including in those stories the often-ignored influence of God in their lives. This is the history that most of us never learned! Although this is an adult book, it's very readable for teens. You might follow this book with the sequel From Sea to Shining Sea , which covers the period from the Constitutional Convention up to pre-Civil War times. The book is available on audio CDs or MP3 for those who prefer to listen.

A reader of this blog recently contacted me offline to ask my opinion of the book The Light and the Glory , by Peter Marshall Jr. Although I answered her privately, her question is so important that I think it merits a more extended answer here. The Light and the Glory is arguably the most popular Christian interpretation of U. It makes sense to share a few thoughts about it, given that this blog is devoted to the question of what it means to think Christianly and historically about the American past. The first, published in , offers an overview of American history from the voyages of Columbus through the establishment of independence from Britain and the creation of the Constitution.

Did Columbus believe that God called him west to undiscovered lands? Does American democracy owe its inception to the handful of Pilgrims that settled at Plymouth? If, indeed, there was a specific, divine call upon this nation, is it still valid today? The Light and the Glory answers these questions and many more for history buffs. As readers look at their nation's history from God's point of view, they will begin to have an idea of how much we owe to a very few--and how much is still at stake.
