Cultures of Commemoration fills this crucial gap in the historiography by advancing scholarly understanding of Pacific Islander relations with and knowledge of American and Japanese colonialisms in the twentieth century. Drawing from an extensive archival base of government, military, and popular records, Chamorro scholar Keith L Camacho traces the formation of divergent colonial and indigenous histories in the Mariana Islands, an archipelago located in the western Pacific and home to the Chamorro people. He shows that US colonial governance of Guam, the southernmost island, and that of Japan in the Northern Mariana Islands created competing colonial histories that would later inform how Americans, Chamorros, and Japanese experienced and remembered the war and its aftermath.

Second, to offer suggestions for how this problem might be solved. The book takes the history problem to consist of a number of issues related to commemoration of the Asia—Pacific War. These issues include portrayals of the war in Japanese history textbooks, Japanese prime ministerial visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, and apologies and compensation to victims of Japanese aggression. The book contends that commentary on the history problem has been dominated by an orthodoxy that has been excessively concerned with the Japanese side of the problem. This orthodoxy has highlighted Japanese nationalist commemoration and lack of contrition as the main reason for the persistence of the history problem.

The Contemporary Pacific

Researchers have raised questions about recovering traumatic situations such as the Holocaust, the bombing of Hiroshima, the Vietnam war or the fratricidal massacres in Yugoslavia. Although some classic studies have identified important aspects relating to history and memory, there are several ways of dealing with the past, all of which involve interests, power and exclusion. The politics of just memory with regard to crimes committed in the past, a debate in which various academic areas as well as society in general have been involved, depends on processes of selection and also on elements which extend beyond the scope of human reason. It is necessary to find a balance between an obsession with the past and attempts to impose forgetting.
