Ethnomusicology

Ethnomusicology is the study of music from the cultural and social aspects of the people who make it. It encompasses distinct theoretical and methodical approaches that emphasize cultural, social, material, cognitive, biological, and other dimensions or contexts of musical behavior, in addition to the sound component. Folklorists , who began preserving and studying folklore music in Europe and the US in the 19th century, are considered the precursors of the field prior to the Second World War. Bruno Nettl once characterized ethnomusicology as a product of Western thinking, proclaiming that "ethnomusicology as western culture knows it is actually a western phenomenon"; [2] in , Jeff Todd Titon described it as the study of "people making music". Stated broadly, ethnomusicology may be described as a holistic investigation of music in its cultural contexts. When the field first came into existence, it was largely limited to the study of non-Western music—in contrast to the study of Western art music, which had been the focus of conventional musicology. In fact, the field was referred to early in its existence as "comparative musicology," defining Western musical traditions as the standard to which all other musics were compared, though this term fell out of use in the s as critics for the practices associated with it became more vocal about ethnomusicology's distinction from musicology.

Whose research is it really? If musical experience and meaning are co-created through listening and performative participation and a form of embodied knowledge, what does this mean in terms of copyright, cultural ownership, epistemologies and the academic enterprise of writing about the music of others? Who owns musical experience? Who, if anyone, has the right to write about shared musical experience, and then sell this writing, or gain a doctorate from it? Has written musical experience in Western academe, however incomplete and personal, become a commodity that can be copyrighted and sold or bartered for employment?

Bruno Nettl’s the study of ethnomusicology: thirty-one issues and concepts: an essay review

Hebert Boston University Nettl, B. The study of ethnomusicology: Thirty-one issues and concepts. Bruno Nettls The study of ethnomusicology: Thirty-one issues and concepts: An essay review. This review examines Bruno Nettls The Study of Ethnomusicology: Thirty-one Issues and Concepts, a newly redeveloped and expanded version of his classic introduction to the field.

This research is a bio-bibliographical study of an American ethnomusicologist, Anthony Seeger. Issues discussed include seeking information about Seeger as an important figure, his contribution to scientific development, music education, music history, and basic knowledge of ethnomusicology. Since the data are in the form of written sources that not only come from his works but also the works of others who cite his works so that literature review is used as a research method to obtain answers to the problems raised. From the success of Seeger, we could learn how important fieldwork is in ethnomusicology.

A thoroughly revised third edition of the classroom perennial and scholarly classic. Scholars and students alike have hailed it not just for its insights but for a disarming, witty style able to engage and entertain even casual readers while providing essential grounding in the field. In this third edition, Nettl revises the text throughout, adding new chapters and discussions that take into account recent developments across the field and reflecting on how his thinking has changed or even reversed itself during his sixty-year career.

Part II. Views from Elsewhere

Editorial: The Evolution of Music
