Preventing Crime pp Cite as. What is the problem with young people participating in gangs? And why do gangs represent a crime problem? Gang researchers e. Decker and Van Winkle 31 would claim that a group must satisfy at least three criteria in order to be considered a gang in a criminological sense: a gang is an age-graded peer group that exhibits some permanence, engages in criminal activity as a core activity and has some symbolic representation of group membership name, symbols, dress, etc.

If a group does not satisfy all three criteria, then it is something other than a gang, for example a group of friends, a network or part of a broader subculture. Unable to display preview. Download preview PDF. Skip to main content. This service is more advanced with JavaScript available.

Youth Gangs, Violence and Social Respect

Since the midth century, gang violence in this country has become widespread—all 50 states and the District of Columbia report gang problems, and reports have increased for 5 of the past 7 years. Despite the steady growth in the number and size of gangs across the United States and the criminal behavior and violence they spawn, little is known about the dynamics that drive gangs and how to best combat their growth. For instance, no consensus exists on how gangs form, and few gang prevention programs have been rigorously evaluated. The author examines how community members can begin to assess their gang problems and provide necessary enhancements to prevention and intervention activities. The bulletin also describes a number of effective and promising programs that may help prevent youth delinquency and gang violence. No programs have been developed specifically to prevent gangs from emerging.

White Palgrave Macmillan, , pp. Densley Palgrave Macmillan, , pp. In the last few months, the increasingly crowded academic field of gang studies became more crowded still with the release of three books, two of which are reviewed here, the other being The Gang and Beyond: Interpreting Violent Street Worlds by Simon Hallsworth. Interestingly, all three are published by Palgrave Macmillan, who appear keen to corner this end of the developing market. Both contributions seek to explore issues of youth violence and group offending in either the Australian or United Kingdom context, whilst interpreting the interrelationships which so often define the complexity of the gang phenomenon. Whilst both are quite different in their approach and content, refreshingly each book foregrounds the voices and stories of participants offering a vivid account of recreational

Violent Youth Gangs

Youth violence has become a concern as gangs become a popular option for urban children and teenagers and weapons use among young populations becomes more prevalent. Exploring the psychological motivations and foundations upon which such violence is developed and cultivated can assist in better understanding the modern dilemma of violence, weapons use, and gang behavior among children, teenagers, and young adults. Global Perspectives on Youth Gang Behavior, Violence, and Weapons Use reconsiders the traditional understandings of youth violence in various forms, such as gang activities, criminal behavior, and weapons use. Focusing on the psychosocial elements of violence among children, teenagers, and young adults, this timely publication is ideally designed for use by policy makers and government executives, professionals, educators, and graduate-level students involved in psychology, criminology, social work, and criminal justice studies.

This information sheet is one of a series providing information related to youth gang involvement. It is designed to assist those who are concerned about youth gangs and who are working to help prevent youth from becoming involved in gangs or to help them leave gangs. The vast majority of young people never get involved in crime or join gangs. Those who do join gangs tend to have specific risk factors that influence their involvement and membership in gangs. To effectively prevent youth from joining gangs it is essential to understand these risk factors.

Over the past two decades, Latin America has experienced an unprecedented growth in violence and crime, which has been largely attributed to the emergence and proliferation of youth gangs. Across Latin America, youth gangs have therefore become a major source of fear and the prime target for repressive measures.

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. This is the first book dedicated to Australian youth gangs, exploring the subtleties and nuances of street life for young men and their quest for social respect. The key focus is on group violence and the ways in which the 'gang' provides a forum for the expression of this violence. Rob White has produced a very readable and illuminating book that will be required reading for any one with an interest in criminology or youth: it rightly deserves to become a classic text. Rob White's writing is accessible as it is perceptive.
