Readers of this volume will be left in little doubt as to its principal message. The editors make clear their undoubtedly correct belief that further advances in the study of medieval diet and nutrition demand the adoption of an interdisciplinary approach, combining the resources of the historical, archaeological, and scientific record. For historians familiar with the work of Christopher Dyer, Barbara Harvey and Christopher Woolgar all contributors to the present book , that conclusion is inescapable: their earlier writings on food and diet are here supplemented and refined but not challenged. Historians may find greater novelty in the archaeological and scientific papers, but uncertainties of interpretation abound, and the editors accept that there are difficulties in integrating the different types of evidence. It is to be hoped that the Diet Group from which these 19 papers spring continues its work in developing new

Fast food is a type of mass-produced food designed for commercial resale and with a strong priority placed on "speed of service" versus other relevant factors involved in culinary science. Fast food was originally created as a commercial strategy to accommodate the larger numbers of busy commuters, travelers and wage workers who often did not have the time to sit down at a public house or diner and wait for their meal. By making speed of service the priority, this ensured that customers with strictly limited time a commuter stopping to procure dinner to bring home to their family, for example, or an hourly laborer on a short lunch break were not inconvenienced by waiting for their food to be cooked on-the-spot as is expected from a traditional "sit down" restaurant. The fastest form of "fast food" consists of pre-cooked meals kept in readiness for a customer's arrival Boston Market rotisserie chicken , Little Caesars pizza , etc. Other fast food outlets, primarily the hamburger outlets McDonald's , Burger King , etc. Fast food restaurants are traditionally distinguished by their ability to serve food via a drive-through. Outlets may be stands or kiosks , which may provide no shelter or seating, or fast food restaurants also known as quick service restaurants.
The study of medieval food culture is certainly one that is actively pursued across many European institutions, but, as the editors eloquently demonstrate, scholarly syntheses remain limited in both their number and scope. Framed by critical introductory and concluding chapters, seventeen papers draw on written, archaeological, and artistic sources to explore diverse aspects of medieval English food culture with reference to continental examples where appropriate. The content is sub-divided into two sections: part one is a survey of foodstuffs and part two consists of case studies in diet and nutrition. Stone considers its complete lifecycle, from the management of the full range of field crops to the production of pottage, bread, and ale. An impressive series of estimates of bread and ale production and consumption punctuate a concise analysis of dynamic patterns on either side of the Black Death, demonstrating how changing pressure on agricultural resources prompted shifts in consumption at every level of society. Vegetables, grown more intensively in towns than in the countryside, appear to have provided a higher proportion of food for the lowest levels of medieval society.
