Abstract This research investigates the utilization of aluminum coagulation electrocoagulation EC and conventional chemical coagulation and membrane-based separation processes microfiltration MF , ultrafiltration UF , nanofiltration NF , and reverse osmosis RO for treatment of various impaired water sources.

The first and major part of this research emphasizes the evaluation and optimization of aluminum electro coagulation combined with MF as pretreatment to NF and RO for surface water purification and water reclamation. The second part of this work focuses on mechanisms of boron removal by aluminum EC during hydraulic fracturing wastewater treatment.

The overall hypothesis of the research is that aluminum EC, which generates Al OH 3 precipitates in situ partially removes dissolved, macromolecular, and colloidal contaminants including natural organic matter NOM , boron, and turbidity, which can significantly improve water quality and reduce fouling in downstream membrane-based water treatment operations.

Furthermore, coupled EC-MF was also shown to control NF fouling during non-saline and brackish surface water treatment. Since NF fouling mechanisms depend on membrane solute rejection characteristics, this study also demonstrated the need to balance product water quality with the need to minimize NF membrane fouling through appropriate membrane selection.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The effect of added chemicals i. Investigations on the feasibility of aluminum EC for treatment of hydraulic fracturing wastewater particularly for boron removal was also conducted.

This work emphasized mechanistic understandings of the boron uptake by freshly precipitated amorphous Al OH 3 generated during EC. The hypothesized ligand-exchange mechanism governing boron uptake by Al OH 3 precipitates was confirmed via extensive surface characterization.

Patuxent Water Reclamation Facility Expansion

The Parshall flume is an open channel flow metering device that was developed to measure the flow of surface waters and irrigation flows. The Parshall flume is a fixed hydraulic structure. The Parshall flume accelerates flow through a contraction of both the parallel sidewalls and a drop in the floor at the flume throat. Under free-flow conditions the depth of water at specified location upstream of the flume throat can be converted to a rate of flow. Some states specify the use of Parshall flumes, by law, for certain situations commonly water rights. The flumes are not patented and the discharge tables are not copyright protected.

Our design minimized odorous gases and allowed for minimal to no interruption in plant operations, preventing disruption to the community and avoiding permit violations. The expansion design increased plant capacity from 7. The expanded facility, now capable of providing an advanced level of treatment, includes the influent pump station, oxidization ditches, secondary clarifiers, denite filters, UV disinfection, chemical feed systems, cascade aeration and an effluent pump station. We incorporated high-efficiency, low-maintenance turbo blowers to provide operational cost savings and reduce noise and vibration. To provide a robust and reliable system to control the WRF and reduce deficiencies in the existing system, the expansion design included a state-of-the-art process control system that brought efficiency, ease of integration, reliability, redundancy and a reduction in life cycle cost. Using our process modeling expertise, our design team developed hydraulic configurations to minimize energy use at the effluent pump station. We applied stormwater best practices to promote green infrastructure.

In one case, a city in South Carolina is using VFDs as a reliable alternative to obsolete technology for driving pumps in its wastewater treatment stations. The facility can handle 11 million gallons of water per day. In the course of its operations, the facility accomplishes a foot lift of wastewater via a sequenced combination of pumps. In the original installation, pump flow was controlled by an eddy current clutch. He therefore decided to update the system instead of spending more money on the outdated equipment.

Math Solutions: Hydraulic Loading Calculations

Chemoautotrophic ammonia oxidizing bacteria AOB have the metabolic ability to oxidize ammonia to nitrite aerobically. This metabolic feature has been widely used, in combination with denitrification, to remove nitrogen from wastewater in wastewater treatment plants WWTPs. The ecological principles underlying AOB community dynamics and nitrification stability and how they are related are also poorly understood.

Hydraulic loading is defined in a wastewater treatment process unit as the volume of wastewater applied to the surface of the process unit per time period. Hydraulic loading design criteria are often expressed as maximum days to optimize water clarity resulting from actual square feet surface area per incoming flow rate. This tool for operators, represented through video tutorials, offers mathematical templates to master the hydraulic loading gallons per day per square foot by evaluating the incoming flow and surface area. The tool also provides definitions, explanations, and alternative applications for the calculations beyond the specific examples presented. In addition to operators, it may also serve educators, engineers, regulators, and others. Assume flow of 2, gpm from a.
